My memory of him....
After taking a deep breath, he raises his baton and with his smart looking tuxedo, he gathers the attention of us, the MYO and voila...everything sets in pace.. and then it was all magical! Everyone on stage starts to feel the beat of the music instantly!
Those were the days, when we were in our teens playing our various instruments, from the high pitched violin, piccolo, flute, viola, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, saxophone to the lower register instruments like cello, double bass, tuba and not forgetting the piano, keyboards and percussions.
I can still recall vividly that he, who was and still my Idol, loved to sing many tunes, especially songs by Frank Sinatra and other songs alike. When in the mood, he would sometimes play the violin with much passion and showmanship. Although a little too much exaggerated at times, but I enjoyed watching him sway with his violin.. What a genuine performer he was! I also remember clearly asking him to smoke less.. 'Sir, not good for your health, Sir...' but he didn't care less.. He gave me the look that a cigarette or two will not harm him... Till now, I can still recall his voice, his laughter and even his intonation and accents..Another thing that I can still remember is his super fast driving! It was so speedy that I always pray quietly to myself when I had the opportunity to ride with him.. How I missed him!
There was one fine incident that happened a couple of years ago after his passing. .. As I was listening to a very expressive piece for violin and piano written by a well-known English composer Sir Edward Elgar and trying to figure out the details in the piece..I suddenly thought of him, how passionately he used to play the violin and telling me 'let the violin sing to you!' ... and before I can even move on to the next note in the music, my tears was running down my face.. I felt so sad that in my heart, I kept asking how could such a talented artist, still at the peak of his age was unable to continue his teachings and love for music...?? How could he leave me without even giving a chance for me to continue my violin lessons under him in pursuing my music at that time...!!!
I still wonder sometimes.. It would be so much different if he would have been with us still.
Well, my MYO friends, I am quite sure that you know exactly who I am talking about here...
Thank you, Sir from the bottom of my heart. I am not who I am today without you..
I believe that he will remain in our hearts forever.
