Yesterday Once More
I was driving home yesterday (Jan 5th 2018) evening, and without knowing it, this song crawled silently into my head. Perhaps it has been awhile since I last heard this song, or perhaps my mind has been pre-occupied with other things while driving.... I could not recall the name of the song.
What I did? Like anyone, I search in google & found it! (How great is the technology nowadays)
I am very sure that this song is one of the top hits for all of us, during the 80's. I am sure that we all can remember the chorus, if not the whole song....
Using the lyrics, I would attempt to bring everyone down the memory lanes again.... for the success that we have done in the 80s for MYO.
The lyrics means a lot to me, and I am sure that it meant alot to others as well.
It is in the 80's when we were young. (We still are, right?) And during our time, the most affordable music that we can get is on the radio.... Unlike today, we can get it from CD/DVD players, from MP3/MP4, from our phones & evey directly play from the cloud.
We all have served in the Malacca Youth Orchestra in the 80s. And I would bet that there is really a lot of mixed feelings for all of us too. To share.....
.....We were having tight schedules then, but yet, we still make time to practice, and to meet up together. How nice that we are able to get together once a week, just to play together....
.....Many of us were already spending a huge amount of time practicing in school, but we still make time for this once a week practice....
.....Many of us were preparing for examinations for the music instruments or the examination at school.
.....The time we spent together, we learnt about each other, we learn about new things, and we all share experiences. There is no boundry, no nationality, no differeces. We all belong to the MYO family....
.....We always look forward to play in a group, once every 2 weeks....
.....Rain or shine (although it is night time every week), we all practice in the same place.
.....We indulged ourselves in the music together. It is so different when you have the strings & the woodwind together....
Each of us have our favourite piece. And each of us would have our own "the moment" for the pieces that we have played. I bet you that you can still recall the tune that really touched your heart, right?
The one that touched my heart deeply is "Getaran Jiwa", by P Ramlee.
Care to share your special piece with others?
Looking back, it has been 30 years ago since our major performance in August 30th 1988.
Apart from practicing, there are a lot of background work being done.... to name a few:
- uniform
- location
- time
- cost analysis
- transportation
- formation & seating of the orchestra
- marketing & analysis.
- sales of tickets
- agenda
- printing of the tickets
- printing of the night agenda
- sponsorship
- songs to play, and which comes first & which comes last
All these needed time & careful planning.... All MYO family members have contributed directly into these activities to make our performance a super successful one.
Those were the days we do not have social media. There is no Facebook, no Whatsapp, no WeChat, no LED signboards, no Youtube, no Google, no VBlog, no Blog, etc.
Really amazed how we get the performance information accross through words of mouth, through newspaper, through friends, and friends of our parents & relatives. That shows that without technology, we were still able to boost the sales of the tickets to the max. Personally, I am extremely impressed on how we make things happened under the leadership of our late Mr Dennis Cheong.
I am only one person to share my experience, and I alone do not have all the details.
But I am sure that the family of MYO'80s will have a lot more to share, to share our feelings, our experiences, the fun, the sorrow, the joy, the sacrifices, the happiness, the sadness, the excitement, the challenges, the difficulties & all the others.
I just started this.... I hope that you could carry on by sharing yours... and make this sharing a very sentimental moment for all of us.... think about what we have done together 30 years ago? Isn't this a moment that is cherishable & valuable?
MYO in the 80s really made my life different.... How about yours?
"Yesterday Once More"
.... The Carpenters
When I was young
I'd listen to the radio
Waitin' for my favorite songs
When they played I'd sing along
It made me smile
Those were such happy times
And not so long ago
How I wondered where they'd gone
But they're back again
Just like a long lost friend
All the songs I loved so well
Every Sha-la-la-la
Every Wo-o-wo-o
Still shines
Every shing-a-ling-a-ling
That they're startin' to sing's
So fine
When they get to the part
Where he's breakin' her heart
It can really make me cry
Just like before
It's yesterday once more
Lookin' back on how it was
In years gone by
And the good times that I had
Makes today seem rather sad
So much has changed
It was songs of love that
I would sing to then
And I'd memorize each word
Those old melodies
Still sound so good to me
As they melt the years away
Every Sha-la-la-la
Every Wo-o-wo-o
Still shines
Every shing-a-ling-a-ling
That they're startin' to sing's
So fine
All my best memories
Come back clearly to me
Some can even make me cry
Just like before
It's yesterday once more
Every Sha-la-la-la
Every Wo-o-wo-o
Still shines
Every shing-a-ling-a-ling
That they're startin' to sing's
So fine
Every Sha-la-la-la
Every Wo-o-wo-o
Still shines
Every shing-a-ling-a-ling
That they're startin' to sing's
So fine
